How the SnowBase Snowshoe Score is Calculated
The SnowBase algorithm treats Snowshoe / Winter Hike with customized thresholds. Unlike generic snow reports, our system balances the physical requirements of your equipment:
- Base Depth Curve: Evaluates coverage over rocks, stumps, and culverts based on a minimum threshold of 4 inches.
- Fresh Snow Bonus: Up to +2.0 bonus points added for soft, untracked snowfall within the past 24 to 72 hours.
- Thermal Degradation: Severe penalties applied when temperatures rise above 34°F (slush/thaw) or during active rain-on-snow.
- Wind & Scouring: Sustained winds over 20 mph or gusts exceeding 35 mph reduce comfort and score rating.
