About SnowBase

An independent, measured-first snow conditions platform engineered specifically for people who ride and ski outside of commercial resorts.

Why SnowBase Was Created

For decades, online snow reporting has been almost exclusively designed for downhill ski resorts. If you rode a snowmobile across Michigan's Upper Peninsula or skied backcountry lines in the Wyoming Tetons, finding accurate, timely snowpack data required digging through raw government telemetry tables and obscure meteorological models.

SnowBase was created to solve this problem. We synthesize automated mountain sensors, government climatological records, and high-resolution atmospheric models into a unified, lightning-fast web application.

Our Core Principles

Measured Data First

We prioritize ground-truth physical sensor observations (USDA SNOTEL and NOAA GHCN) over computer model estimates wherever sensors exist.

Activity-Specific Scoring

A 12-inch base means something very different to a trail groomer than to a backcountry splitboarder in alpine terrain. Our algorithms reflect your exact sport.

Zero Bloat & Zero Login

No paywalls, no forced accounts, no battery-draining tracking scripts. Just instant, accessible static HTML backed by live client hydration.

The Architecture

SnowBase is built on modern static-site generation (Astro) deployed to global edge networks. Telemetry datasets are pre-computed during automated daily build cycles, with individual station pages hydrating real-time Open-Meteo forecasts on demand directly in the visitor's browser.
